According to the Metropolitan Police Department’s preliminary investigation, Mohamed Samura, 18, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, was crossing the campus shortly before 3:40 p.m. on April 11 when a speeding car struck a parked car and continued on the street.

The Audi “failed to negotiate the left turn,” according to the police, and after hitting a guy who was in or near a crossing, it “mounted a curb.”

President Ben Vinson III, Ph.D. of Howard University expressed his sadness over Samura’s passing in a statement that was shared on social media, adding that the university is sending its “deep condolences and prayers to his family, friends, classmates and instructors during this difficult time.”

According to the statement, Samura was “a bright and accomplished member of the Howard University community,” a member of the school’s ESports team, and someone who made the Dean’s List at the School of Business.

According to a GoFundMe page created by Samura’s cousin to pay for his funeral, Samura, also known as “Mo,” was a freshman at Howard University who was interested in studying information systems.

Although Samura’s identity was not disclosed by the police or the statement, a GoFundMe page and a local ABC affiliate reported that on April 11, Samura was headed to a lecture on campus when he was “fatally struck by a Howard faculty member.”

When USA TODAY asked Howard University for comment, the university did not get back to us right away.

The Samura was hit by a staff member’s fast-moving car outside a residence hall, according to The Hilltop, the university’s official publication.

ToMo receive support and assistance while they cope with this “heartbreaking loss,” the dean urged students to contact the University Counseling Service at 202-806-6870. The University offers assistance to teachers and staff through the Employee Assistance Program.

“Mo’s smile will never be forgotten and we will keep his name alive forever,” Adusei said on the GoFundMe page. “He was loved by us all and are hearts are filled with the sweet memories he left behind. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we remember our baby boy, Mo.”
