Keanu Reeves, star of “John Wick,” will play Shadow in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” a source told Variety. He joins a cast that features Jim Carrey as the evil Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as Sonic. A representative for the movie’s production company, Paramount Pictures, declined to comment.
Anthropomorphic hedgehog Shadow (whose fur is black, Sonic’s is blue) is something of an antihero in the games. He is an antagonist to Sonic.
Reeves has appeared in the films “Speed,” “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” “My Own Private Idaho,” and the “Matrix” series. He will next be seen with Ana de Armas in the “John Wick” spinoff “Ballerina.” The reveal of his character in the latest teaser, which debuted last week at CinemaCon, elicited a thunderous cheer from the assembled movie theatre executives, illustrating the actor’s strength at the box office. Alongside Aziz Ansari, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh, Reeves will also co-star in “Good Fortune.”
The most recent “Sonic” sequel will be directed by Jeff Fowler, who helmed the previous two films in the franchise. “Sonic 3,” which will debut in theatres on December 20, 2024, is produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno.
The total global box office receipts for “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” amount to $725.2 million, making the franchise one of Paramount’s most prosperous. A spin-off series called “Knuckles” is also being produced by the studio; it will debut onParamount+.
The John Campea Show revealed the news of Reeves’ casting in “Sonic 3.”
