A 30-year-old man is dead after a shooting on a downtown street where a bar was evacuated early Thursday, Toronto police said. In a news published by the police on Thursday morning, it was stated that a 36-year-old woman and a 33-year-old man were also seriously injured and getting treatment. Police responding to Queen Street West and Portland Street received a call of a shooting outside on the south side of the road, between Portland and the nearest street, at approximately 2:36 p.m.
“Just after morning 2:30, we received several calls to the address for assistance regarding the attack,” said Detective Sergeant. Trevor Grieve told reporters at the scene. “14th Precinct officers responded to the incident, and at that time, we found three victims.”
Two adults were taken to a Toronto hospital with serious injuries, while the third suffered life-threatening injuries. Paramedic Services said. Police later confirmed that one of the victims died from his injuries in hospital.
A press release issued late Thursday identified the victim as Ibrahim Abdikarim of Toronto. This is the city’s 20th homicide victim this year.
Grieve said the shooting prompted people to take shelter in nearby restaurants and bars.
He said it was too early to determine whether the incident was intentional or not, but many people were on the street at the time and the police wanted witnesses to come forward.
“We are asking for the public’s help in speaking to witnesses who may have been here yesterday,” Grieve said. “Large crowds are gathering in some local areas.”
Yellow police tape cordoned off much of Queen Street’s on Thursday morning and police will be seen looking for the evidence in the rain. The area was closed for several hours but later reopened.
There is little information about the suspects so far, but police say they fled in a dark two-door car.
Grieve said he does not believe that every time there is danger on city streets, there is more danger in the community.
He said, “Frankly, from a public safety perspective, whenever someone has a gun and opens fire in the middle of a busy street in Toronto, make sure people are concerned about gun safety and violence in the city.” I don’t think they are particularly concerned about the safety of the community.
It is unclear if there is a relationship between the victims.
Police are continuing to investigate and encourage anyone with information about the shooting to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers.
