A few weeks before he was set to graduate, a 22-year-old New Jersey student studying political science at Bucknell University was discovered dead in his fraternity home.
Mountain Lakes Resident and Bucknell Student Discovered Dead on Campus:
Christian Samay, a student at Bucknell University and native of Mountain Lakes, was discovered dead on campus on March 30. Services for him were held on Friday.
Samay, 22, completed his high school education at Mountain Lakes in 2020, as stated in his obituary on the Norman Dean Funeral Home website. He then pursued his political science degree with a minor in legal studies at Bucknell University. He had worked as an investment banking analyst during the summers but planned to become a lawyer after graduation.
Samay was an athlete who played a lot as a child in Mountain Lakes. He has played soccer and lacrosse since he was little. His club soccer team placed first in the state and the top ten in the nation, and they won the first Barcelona Summer Cup, where they represented the USA U18 squad. After serving as team captain for two years in high school, Samay was remembered in the obituary as a “dominant and talented physical force” and a “consummate team player and loyal teammate.”
While attending Bucknell, he was a dean’s list student and an involved brother in his fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta. He was chosen as the fraternity’s vice president and treasurer in his junior year.
According to his obituary, Samay enjoyed boat excursions, waterskiing, golfing, mini golfing, and spending time at the beach with his loved ones.
Obituary:
Everyone in his vicinity, including friends, relatives, and strangers, benefited from him.
“He lived every day of his life with dedication, zeal, and love for those important to him,” according to the funeral notice. “He would often engage in random acts of kindness with strangers and be never afraid to speak up for what is right and safeguard his loved ones under any situation … his positive light will radiate on us forever.”
To pay for Samay’s monuments both within and outside the Phi Gamma Delta home, as well as future events honoring her life, a GoFundMe page was established. The Wounded Warrior Project would get any leftover profits, per his family’s desire.
“With Christian Samay’s passing, we lost a vital, significant person in our lives,” the campaign claims. “Christian was a one-of-a-kind impactful person who always made everyone around him happy.”
On Tuesday, four days after the ceremonies, contributions were still coming in, with almost $63,000 donated.
The president of Bucknell University, located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, John C. Bravman, wrote a letter to the Bucknell community on March 30. The statement continued: “It is with anguished that I share the news of the death of a Bucknell student on campus today … this is an unthinkable loss for the Bucknell community, and our prayers go out to Christian’s family and friends.”
“We acknowledge your support and respect for the private lives of all involved,” he said. “I call upon all Bucknellians to lend a hand to each other in this trying time and to keep Christian’s family in your prayers.”
What is known about the whereabouts of his remains and the manner of his death is unknown, according to the institution.
According to USA TODAY, the news of his passing arrived less than twenty-four hours after the school was placed into lockdown due to an active shooter alarm, which Pennsylvania State Police later confirmed was a hoax that originated in Virginia.
According to Bravman’s statement, Samay’s death had nothing to do with the campus lockdown and active shooter alarm, and there was nothing odd about the circumstances.
