Who is DJ Mister Cee?
Before departing the station in 2014, Mister Cee was a popular D.J. on New York City’s Hot 97 for more than 20 years, during which time his head-bopping mixes echoed on New York radio for decades. “Ready to Die,” the debut album of Notorious B.I.G., with him as executive producer.
Calvin Lebrun, better known as Mister Cee, was born in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in August 1966. He grew up at his grandparents’ house and began DJing under the guidance of his uncle, a D.J., he revealed in November on the satellite radio program Rock The Bells.
He continued by saying that World Famous Supreme Team and Awesome Two, two hip-hop bands, were among his early radio inspirations.
He remarked, “This developed into my love for deejaying and my dream of being on the radio one day.”
Before departing Hot 97, Mister Cee lived the dream and cited the station’s new musical direction.
In 2014, he told The Times, “I may be the solution for the time being, but I doubt that I will still be the solution in five or ten years.”
In an interview with The New York Times that year, Chris Green, a promoter at Capitol Musical Group who had known the D.J. since the mid-1990s, stated that Mister Cee “was the glue between the old and the new” on Hot 97.
Concerns over his sexual orientation infuriated the hip-hop scene, which has always battled with homophobia. In 2014, he briefly returned to the station before finally departing.
Mister Cee continued to DJ songs in clubs and on other radio shows, maintaining his reputation as a highly esteemed character. He hosted a flashback program on 94.7 The Block NYC before passing away.
The station paid respect to Mister Cee by playing a tape of his 2022 mix in observance of the Notorious B.I.G. on the late rapper’s 50th birthday, following the news of his passing on Wednesday.
Big Daddy Kane was a collaborator of the D.J. before the Notorious B.I.G. It’s also acknowledged that Mister Cee assisted in advancing the careers of other rappers like 50 Cent. It took some time for a complete list of Mister Cee’s survival to become public.
During a 2021 Kitchen Talk podcast interview, Mister Cee shared a photo of himself with the hosts when he was three, showing him clutching a 45 r.p.m. record. In 1993, when Mr. Cee joined Hot 97, his father passed away, and he mentioned that year that he had given him the picture. “And he told me, ‘I knew this is what you were going to do,'” the speaker said.
