Liverpool, NY – On Sunday evening, April 14, a Syracuse cop and an Onondaga County sheriff’s deputy were fatally shot and murdered in the Town of Salina.
Today, at a briefing, Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile said, “We lost two heroes.”
Around 8:15 p.m., the shooting occurred in the Oot Meadows subdivision near Darien Drive.
According to a Syracuse Police spokeswoman, the incident started when two officers tried to pull over the suspicious car close to the Emerson Avenue and Hamilton Street intersection in Tipperary Hill. Using information from the license plate, Syracuse Police was able to locate the registered owner’s house on Darien Drive after the car drove off without stopping.
Chief Cecile said: “They asked for assistance from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office because they learned additional information the individual driving the vehicle might be armed. Officers from the city and county arrived at the residence on Darien Drive about the same time.”
The number of officers or deputies that responded first is unknown.
“While they were inspecting the vehicle and saw what appeared to be guns inside,” the Chief explained, “they heard what sounded like someone manipulating a firearm from inside the residence. Moments later, there was an exchange of gunfire between at least one suspect and the officers and deputies.”
After being hit, the suspect, the deputy, and the police were all taken to the hospital and declared dead.
The number of shots fired and who was hit are not disclosed by the police.
The suspect in the shooting has been confirmed dead, but the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office has been working through the night to obtain authorization from the court to search the house and find further suspects in the original crime. There is no proof that the shooting that left many dead involved other people.
