Iran has launched strikes on Israeli land for the first time in history. In the middle of Saturday night, air raid sirens were sent in Israel, and inhabitants were told to seek shelter as explosions were heard and air defenses were activated. Interceptions lit up the night sky across the country, and Israel’s allies shot down numerous drones and missiles before they reached Israeli soil. The military escalation encompassed at least nine countries, with rockets launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen and intercepted by Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, as well as Jordan.
The attack involved drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles:
Iran launched around 300 drones and missiles towards Israel, the Israeli military said on Sunday. According to a televised statement from military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the strike included 170 drones and 30 cruise missiles, none of which entered Israeli land, and 110 ballistic missiles, only a few of which reached Israel. The BBC has not independently verified these data. The shortest route from Iran to Israel is approximately 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) via Iraq, Syria, and Jordan.
Bombardments were launched from various countries:
On Saturday night, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) announced the launch of drones and missiles. Iraqi security sources told Reuters that rockets were seen flying over Iraq towards Israel. According to the IRGC, ballistic missiles were fired nearly an hour after the slower-moving drones targeted Israel at about the same time. The US Defence Department reported that US forces intercepted dozens of rockets and drones launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. The Iran-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon also claimed to have fired two missiles toward an Israeli military installation in the occupied Golan Heights, a plateau that Israel has seized from Syria in a move that the majority of the international community does not recognize.
Israel and its allies intercepted the majority of drones and missiles:
Rear Admiral Hagari stated that approximately 99% of the incoming bombardment was intercepted either out of Israeli territory or over the nation. They included all drones and cruise missiles, which have a flat trajectory, as well as the majority of ballistic missiles, which have an arcing trajectory and use gravity to achieve highly high speeds.US President Joe Biden said US forces “helped Israel take down nearly all” of Iran’s drones and missiles launched on Sunday. In a statement, he stated that the United States had deployed aircraft and warships to the region before the unprecedented strike. US Central Command (Centcom) later published an update, saying that its forces had destroyed over 80 drones and at least six ballistic missiles.
